The brute knew he was dreaming, but he could not make himself wake up from the nightmare. His stilts were carrying him as fast he could through the trees, knowing he had to get to her, had to move faster to get there and save her. His chest heaved, his lungs felt as if they were going to burst but he kept pushing himself, knowing that if he didn’t move faster he would be too late and she would be gone. And suddenly her form was in front of him, shaking in pain and crying, calling for a brute he did not know. There were three small squirming beings next to her, covered in blood. There was so much blood. His sister’s small form was covered in the sticky substance more was puddling on the ground. He knew there was no way anyone could survive losing that much blood. He knew she would not make it.
Summer woke with a start, panting and shaking, his bodice covered in sweat. She was gone, she was really gone. His baby sister, the young girl he was supposed to have protected. The girl he was supposed to keep safe and he had let her die. The brute thought that she was dead, but clearly he had not searched enough. And now she was gone forever, and this time it was real. He saw the light leave her yellow orbs, saw her last shuddering breath. A pain filled his chest, a pain that he thought he was over feeling. He thought his entire family was dead, and that thought had nearly killed him. But he had pulled through and found a new home, found a new place to focus on and distract himself from the terrors of his past. And now, with one visit from one kalak, he found out everything he had thought to be true was a lie. His siblings were alive. The brute still did not know how many of them were alive, but he knew at least Nymeria was, and if the femme he had encountered was not lying, then Grey Wind as well. Lady had been alive, but well, he couldn’t think about that. Wouldn’t think about that anymore. But the thought would not leave his mind, the image of her dead form. The large brute shook his head, trying to clear the thoughts that were tangling in his brain. He needed to distract himself before he went mad.
The smoky brute pushed his form out of the den. It was still dark out, and he knew it was the middle of the night, but he did not care. He could not stand to be in his den anymore, not with only the company of his thoughts. He did not think anyone else in his pack would be awake so he decided to patrol the borders, sharpen his scent upon his territory. And so with a goal in mind Summer set out, briskly trotting through the trees, pausing to mark different areas that seemed to have more of a stale scent. He took his time, making sure the task was done properly, and prolonging when he would have to go back to his den and attempt to get some more sleep. Summer did not sleep much anymore, not since that damn female had come to visit him.
Suddenly a call rang through the trees, and he paused head cocked to the side to listen, trying to determine if it was the vocals of a lupine he knew. Summer realized it was a stranger and increased his speed, slightly on edge, wondering why someone would come near his pack in the middle of the night. But, like always, Summer hoped for the best in everyone and could only assume that it was someone who needed a home and not a lupine that meant them any harm. His yellow orbs, already adjusted to the darkness, spotted the form of a teen male just outside the borders. He swiftly approached him, banner held high to show the pride he felt for the pack he had been put in charge of. ”Hello stranger. I am Summer, Alpha of Bright Moon. What is your name and what brings you here at such a late hour?” There was a curious, but friendly look upon his features, waiting to hear what this stranger had to say.
