I know they have been catching quite a few around long island. We were on the crappie at north fork on sat but they got hit pretty hard and sun was a lot tougher. Glo chart jigs a foot off the bottom tipped with a red spike. That's all I can tell you. I'm new to ice fishing and still trying to figure it out.gl. get your grandson some fish. Maybe some of the IL gurus on here can help you out some more. And as far as it goes on the people keeping limits, until a few years ago, there were no limits and Indian and many other lakes still had plenty of crappie with lots of people keeping every 7 incher they caught. Just my 2cents.
