FROM THE OCEAN SHE RISES

Jörmungandr had been reclusive lately. When the dun stallion had won the ownership of the forest, she had stayed but she did not crowd either of the horses. Her mind was fraught with worry over the predicament she should herself in and the loss of the herd she had called her family. None had remained after Lyden left and as far as she could tell, only Aureila would have been around had Lyden won. The herd had fallen apart long before Asp staked his claim on all that had been theirs. Jörmungandr stayed because the forest and her daughter was the only thing she had left – and despite her temporarily subdued nature, Asp had seemed promising. He defended the forest and the small herd he had with a fire, something the buckskin could admire.

Asp did not stick around, however. The buckskin took advantage of the relationship that was Asp and Dragonmaw and managed to evade being driven away with them. She was not alone long before her son arrived to visit and, finding the forest empty, took it for himself. Jörmungandr knew he would not hold it for long – he was too young and fragile for that yet. The bachelors still had much to teach him but his arrival did spark the fire in Jörmungandr once more. She would not stand around unheard. This forest was hers.

Olaf's return to the forest did not change that simple fact. He might be her sire, but that did not make her obsolete. She knew how to run a herd and she would not take a back seat or be turfed out just because he was the lead stallion. After he went to overthrow her son – something she didn't care to watch - Jörmungandr began to walk back toward the herd. Her progress was slower than her sire's with her newborn son at her side. Vargr was a due a nap but these circumstances would not allow for it until Jörmungandr had asserted herself amongst the mares.

While a draft mare moves to approach Olaf, Vargr and his older sister hang back at the edge of the herd, full of curiosity. The buckskin mare, however, approaches the nearest mare, extending her muzzle to exchange breaths in greeting. Her ears lean back slightly and her neck is curved to show her dominance but she will no bother with a full show unless the other mare postures back,
