Since 2000 only 3 people have been killed by mountain lions in all of the US and Canada. All 3 were adults who were by themselves when attacked. You can find a complete list going back to 1890 here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_cougar_attacks_in_North_America - Can you think of a less likely cause of death?
In California, lions are protected from sport hunting. Despite its very large human population and huge tracts of public lands, there were only 3 fatal attacks and 12 nonfatal attacks between 1986 and 2014 - http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/lion/attacks.html
People perceive that cougars are extremely dangerous because of media hype. Can you imagine people reading or watching detailed accounts of every serious traffic accident? Boring!!! Replies:
