Under the watchful eye of her white-clad mother, Zaida takes to exploring the Falls. The smoky black filly keeps her distance from the tall and boring adults, bounding playfully across the meadow adjacent to the water. The green grass below her is all but a blur as she runs and kicks at the air with all her might, punctuating each strike with a satisfied grunt before repeating the process over again. Deciding she has ventured far enough in this direction, she spins on her long thin legs and bolts towards her mother, her small fluffy tail whipping behind her like a propeller. She stops suddenly near the dam and lifting her narrow shoulders, she pulls her forelimbs off the earth. With her knees pressed against the mare’s barrel, she extends her neck at tries to bite at the mare withers but too short to reach her target, the foal retracts and lands back on the ground. With her little ears pressed forward she rolls her hazel eyes across the terrain, in search of something, or someone, to play with. She focuses on the small waterfall and the river that sits below it; its roar and fast movement calling to the girl. She trots towards it with her petite crown held high, her round rump bouncing with each stride. At the water’s edge she watches the bubbles and foam dissipate upon the churning water. The liquid is clear and as she makes her way down the water’s edge, she spy’s the brightly coloured scales of a fish. It flits this way and that, its movements jerky and unpredictable and too much for the foal to resists, so cautiously dips her toe into the cool liquid. The fish darts away from the intruder and leaves her standing alone, with her front hooves submerged in water and a disappointed look upon her pretty face. |
