it would seem these monsters are men

all I knew were the stories I was told of monsters
and valiant men sworn to slay them.

Islands were familiar to her and so, when she saw them, a great excitement reached far within her body and grasped her very soul. She whinnied as she danced into the water, her short legs pulling her body wait through the ocean from mainland to island. Yet when she’d pulled herself onto the shore it hadn’t been what she’d been expecting. Here there was an assault of scents, the grass was overgrazed in places and paths of dirt were marked with hoofprints overlapping one another.

So she left to another island as soon as she had her strength. She’d seen more looming in the distance, after all. Perhaps she would find what it was she was looking for…

Eventually, she did. It was exactly of home. The palm trees, the humid jungle, the gold sands and turquoise waters. She nearly sighed with absolute joy to lay eyes upon it. Giving a toss of her head she trotted up the shoreline, her hooves pushing into the soft sand. Everything which was so familiar only excited her more and more. Yet, the longer she went, the more she began to realize this was nothing more than a dream. A beautiful one, perhaps… but a dream. The sights may be familiar but there wasn’t a familiar face, a familiar scent…. Nothing.

Her happy trot came to a stumbling stop as the sorrow dripped and bled into her joy. Yet, just as it did so, it appeared she’d rounded a stretch of beach where another horse stood.

A stallion.

Her nostrils flared as her head lifted – nose pale pink, face white, poll a blue-black. Both ears were forward, her muscles coiled beneath her pelt.

it would seem these monsters are men

and it would seem these men fear their own monsters
