Nephilim’s ears flicked as Al-Sarim grew quiet and less animated in his tone. As if he were standing on the verge of a storm, Nephilim felt his muscles tense, his chest faintly tight. His body was preparing for the howling winds and icy rain, but it would not be the elements that would turn on Nephilim, but the words of a friendly acquaintance. Gold eyes darkening just a bit, the younger stallion steadied his gaze on the bay as the stallion stepped to view down the scope of the territory – or what could be seen of the wide shoreline that gave the territory its name.

The fire of his rage was stoked all too easily, Al-Sarim’s words the breath against the still-warm coals which inspired red hot flecks up to catch the tinder that was still waiting to burn. Nephilim’s ears turned back, though they did not pin, and his tail flicked at his hindquarters. He thought of telling the stallion that while the Bay was nice now it would not be as the weather progressed. Nephilim had arrived in winter when every day was hard winds and freezing temperatures, he had seen how unforgiving Tinuvel could be and he had survived it. He didn’t plan to have lived through a few seasons in this territory only to lose it so soon.

“Keh,” he spat the bitter laugh and his hooves moved so that he backed up and swung his hind end about, facing Al-Sarim a little more head-on (though not directly as not to place the older stallion in his blind-spot). “You better get ready for one hell of a fight, because I’m not just going to go belly up. The Bay is mine.” He hadn’t realized just how determined he was to remain a band stallion until this moment, hadn’t realized how much strength could spawn inside him when spurned by anger.
