FROM THE OCEAN SHE RISES

Unable to fully understand the conversation, and caring even less, Sköll snorted and shook his head to try and relieve some of the boredom that was setting in. He didn’t know who the pale stallion was or why he was here, or even why his mother was taking the time to speak with him. His mismatched eyes, one golden and one blue, scanned the surrounding area for any sign of Gravewolf or Vargr but neither of the colts were in sight so he supposed he’d just have to hang around.

Though an ear twisted toward her son, the buckskin mare watched Lyden carefully, trying to figure out exactly what he had been expecting. Had he expected her to run to him and just forget that he had left without a word? To forgive him for not trying harder to fight for their family? It didn’t help that his gaze rested on the ground, unable to meet her eye. She was so used to facing her mistakes and troubles head on no matter how hard it was. It irked her that he didn’t have the decency to actually look at her while they spoke.

When his gaze met hers and he began to speak again, her ears seemed dance in her uncertainty. He spoke of lust and love and, in a way, she felt perhaps he was starting to understand. He had been too reckless with his love in the past, forgetting what was important to fulfil a different need. He had put lust above his love for his family and it had destroyed them but at least he was owning that mistake now. As he fell silent though, she tilted her head curiously. ”And Skylar?” The question fell from her mouth before she could stop it. After all she had begun to understand about Lyden and Skylar, was he really just writing her off as lust? If she were to believe that, then could she really trust the depth of his supposed feeling for her?

When he says he should have stayed for her, a soft smile found her lips, ”You should have stayed for all of us Lyden, not just me.” Regardless of whether he had loved them or just lusted after them, or if they had not always been the most functional, they had been a family and they had needed him. He spoke of wanting to create a future her and eyed him carefully, ”How would that work?”. She asked, genuinely curious.
