Dreams of StarDust

She snorted in defiance at his affirmation that she was his shadow. As much as she resembled such a thing in her body and color, she could tell she was already more than a wisp that was tied to the wanderings of another. Bigger, smaller, always there, or not, she knew nothing could or would hold her back. Not even being tied to the feet of dear friends.

Before she could correct him again he was splashing around her, joining her in play. The excitement boiled over and she splashed in place while he moved, not wanting to get in the way of his larger body and create a catastrophe. Words came to her when he stood beside her and her eyes widened in delight. Tossing her head and lifting her hooves in the air, she whinnied in glee. When you teach me to fly, nothing can stop us! Her heels kicked again into the air and she sprang around him, flurries of water flying everywhere to create a rain that came from the ground. The movements stopped briefly and she breathed deep as he touched her gently with his nose. It was a moment of calm that not even she could explain or even understand. For once reality took a grip on her mind and brought her into her mind. Dark eyes looked at him and knew she found her friend for life. Others who had come into her life could come and go, but Pan was one she would always seek. He darted away again and the calm was broken, replaced once more by their fantasy world. She watched him kick at the fairie’s captors, summing their instant friendship to companionship and allies as defenders of the imaginary defenseless.

A grin that would one day mature to a smirk grew on the filly’s lips when he spoke to her again. He spoke of her future captors and her eyes widened in excited horror at the shift in their story. She had seen the large felines that prowled the peaks, they were the creatures Pan now spoke of.

I am not one to be caught! What of you? If the monsters take you, I will have to come rescue you! But I cannot fly to their lairs! Whispered words ran through her ears and her body trembled with the powerful fires that ignited the beginning of their adventure.

This way! No other words were spoken and she launched herself into a gallop. Small hooves pounded into the mud and the rocks beside the waters of the falls. Acutely she left over rocks and fallen logs, following little travels trails and occasionally making up her own. The paths split to an inlet by the river or a trail that led to the meadow. Taika turned on her haunches to face back at Pan, the light beaming from her face.

The hunters are there. She pointed to the inlet with her nose. They are keeping the Fairie Prince and his court.

She looked him in the face as she waited for him to come to her side so they could storm the dark kingdom. No, she was not his shadow, muted and dark. She was his reflection.
