forever chasing the sun

Sköll was beginning to think that the peak was a very interesting place after all, and he couldn’t understand why his mother hadn’t mentioned anything about the Gods. ”They really let you do that?” he exclaimed, ”That’s so cool. I always thought they’d be too busy doing whatever Gods do to play with us mortals.”. Normally he could contain his surprise and play it off as if he already knew something but this? This was something else. "Do you get to help them with their duties?" What were their duties, he wondered. Did they go out the sun and stars and tell them how brightly to shine? Did they punish them when they were not bright enough? What he wouldn’t give to converse with the Gods.

The girl seemed as taken with his giants and goblins as he was with her Gods and he nodded sagely. “I’m sure they would love to meet you too. The tree giants can be grumpy sometimes, but they would be very interested in hearing about the gods you run with, and how you came to be blessed by flame.” He finished, indicating her fire touched mane. Was that something that Sun God had bestowed upon her?

The pale boy didn’t have to be asked twice when she told him to follow her. He stuck close to her side, his strides long and fluid as he kept pace with her. ”That sounds plausible.” he agreed, ”though I think we would need to be at least belly deep in the ocean, perhaps even swimming, for one to come to us. Most aren’t able to leave the water and if we stay on the shore, they might not be able to get close enough due to their sheer size. he pondered this only a few moments before another thought struck him, ”Of course, there are the seawalkers. They used to be like us until the mother of the tide bestowed her gift upon them. Now they wear the skins of sea creatures, which allows them to swim, see and breathe underwater. They shed these skins during the night and walk on land as if they were still one of us. Normally they lure other, unsuspecting horses into the ocean to their deaths, but if you can find their skin and hide it, they will be bound to you until it is returned. Perhaps if we could steal one of their skins, we could ask them to get one of their friends to bring us a sea monster in exchange for its safe return." I seemed like a wild plan, but it just might work.

As they reached the base of the peak, the peppered filly stopped and he practically stumbled into her. She blocked his path and explained that stallions couldn’t enter the peak. "Well, I’m still just a colt so I don’t think they would bother claiming me." He wasn’t sure if that’s exactly how it worked, but it he was willing to risk being kept as a trinket if he got to meet the Sun and Star Gods. ”What do they do with the stallions anyway?” he wondered. Maybe they’d try and make him their slave.

He wrinkled his nose at her next answer, unsure why her mother was so against her entering the lagoon. "Ma is taking me to see my father, apparently he lives there. She’s been there loads though and no one has tried to capture her. I wonder what they want you for. Do you think it’s because of your friendship with the Sun and Star Gods?"
