Henes Dominates for Second Win of 2015 MSA Supermodifieds Presented by Adkins Glass Season
Jon Henes sailed to his first supermodified feature victory at the Sandusky Speedway in the last five years on Saturday, August 29th, as he took the lead from Denny Fisher at lap fourteen of the thirty lap Jaycox/Reed Memorial event. Fisher was the winner of the first heat race and Jim Paller won the second, which was marred by the hard crash of May Motorsports’ Charlie Schultz sponsored by Design Engineering Inc. Schultz would break while leading and careen into the outside retaining wall, resulting in a hard impact and Schultz being transported to Firelands Regional Medical Center for further evaluation and observation. Kyle Edwards was the fast qualifier of the night as he toured the half mile at a lap time of 14.464 seconds.
Denny Fisher in the Single Source Paint Source #81 and Kenny Sharp in the Riverview Lanes #5 owned by Joe Gillingham would pace the field to the green with Fisher holding the advantage and expanding said advantage until lap twelve with Kyle Edwards losing a right front tire in turn four on the Level Performance powered #11. Fisher would then have to hold off May Motorsports driver AJ Lesiecki in The Outdoor Option #77 as he and Jon Henes restarted in the second and third positions. Henes would get by Lesiecki one lap after the restart and then go to work on Fisher.
Henes would pass Fisher for fourth in turns three and four on lap fourteen as Henes started to pull away. Jim Paller and Kenny Sharp spinning in turns one and two on the white flag lap would bring the caution flag out with Henes leading Lesiecki, Reid, Fisher and Paller. Paller would ascend to the third position but out front, it would remain Jon Henes in the Custom Chrome Plating/Perfection Fabricators/Michelle’s Café #36 as he sailed on to win over Lesiecki, Paller, Reid and Fisher. Not finishing the race were rookie Kenny Sharp (who was in his first ever supermodified start), Kyle Edwards, Eric Shirey and Kevin Jaycox Jr. Charlie Schultz did not make the start of the race due to being at the local hospital receiving evaluations after his hard heat race wreck.
Jim Paller leads by just one point over Jon Henes in the 2015 Midwest Supermodified Association standings. AJ Lesiecki is down by seven points while teammate Charlie Schultz gets booted from the lead to fourth, forty-eight points behind. Kevin Jaycox Jr rounds out the top five, sixty-four points down with two races left in the MSA season.
