it would seem these monsters are men

all I knew were the stories I was told of monsters
and valiant men sworn to slay them.

With her eyes full of the antics of her children, their little personalities already beginning to shine through though were so young, Abigail hadn’t paid mind to Pagan in the distance. She’d seen him, of course, but trusting him as the lead stallion in the Inlet and knowing he was a friend, she did not feel the intense need to protect her children from his presence. He was a member of their family as well, though not related by blood. He extended a welcome into his home, sheltered them where they may otherwise have not had shelter. He risked his health to keep them protected and Abigail appreciated it.

It wasn’t until she caught sight of his shape moving, drawing closer, that she finally turned her head to look at him fully. A kind smile met her pale pink lips and pride swelled inside her as he looked onto her sons. “They are certainly handsome, aren’t they?” She replied, her blue eyes caught by her children, the bold Dmitrei and the more subdued Dragomir. Lowering her head, Abigail gently brushed her muzzle against Dragomir, giving him a loving touch as she was prone to do to her children, whether they wanted it or not. It would likely continue even as they grew older, thought Abigail, for she’d never known she could love something as purely as she loved her children.

“This is Dragomir,” she said gently, gaze sweeping down to the red and white colt at her side. “And that,” her gaze lifted to the gold and white boy, “is Dmitrei.”

A few seconds ticked by before Abigail lifted her gaze to the surrounding area of the Inlet, seeing Braylen nowhere about. She had thought, at least once, if not more, that she’d scented him in the private clearing she’d chosen to birth their sons, but wasn’t sure if he’d just been passing by or if the wind had caught his coat and brought it to her for comfort. She did not want to alert Pagan that she had yet to see him, but she knew she couldn’t leave her sons and wander off to find him. The children needed her now, first and foremost.

Her blue eyes left the Inlet and returned instead to Pagan. “Have you seen Braylen?” She tried to keep her voice even when she did; still attempting to not let on that she was any bit nervous of his absence. Perhaps he was patrolling a far border and would return shortly…

it would seem these monsters are men
and it would seem these men fear their own monsters
