Joy as well as surprise could not be kept from the stallion’s face at Peyton’s words. Never would he have thought that night would have led to something wonderful and magical. His smile spread across his face into a proud and happy beam as he looked upon the mare and his son. Grinning from ear to ear, the man stepped forward, brushed his nose gently against Peyton’s before letting it travel down her neck. He breathed in her scent, letting it fill him with happiness and contentment. From the first time he had seen her in the snow, scared of coming into a stranger’s land, he had wanted to be near her, to offer her a place to live and a place to be. It had been all he could do to comfort her in the cold storms that night. “You are amazing. He is amazing.”

The stallion looked over at his son, who stared back at him, breathing deep. With a grin, the man moved his head to breath heavily into the colt’s face. Samhain snorted back and stomped his hoof at him, affronted that he had come to invade the cave he shared with his mother.

Chuckling, Pagan returned his shining eyes Peyton, reaching out to her once more. “I have often thought about you, and I have missed you.” He pulled his head away to look at her rightfully. She had first come to his land looking for her father, but he had always wanted to invite her to stay. “The Inlet is open for you to call home, if you wish it. You and Samhain, of course, are always welcome. The winters get cold, and I would hate for you to be alone.” His memory flashed him back to his first winter. He had suffered the frigid season alone in the snow and the sleet. Madness had been close to setting in before the spring had come to brighten the world. He would have hated to think that such a fate and condition would fall onto two souls who were his family.
