the bravest of the brave

Fear; it was such an all consuming thing. It made the heart beat so hard and fast that your chest ached and your breath never seemed to bring enough air to the ever rise and fall of lungs. Eyes wide and mind whirling with panic, Xio raced through the forest as fast as her growing legs could possibly carry her. Though she had only met him once, the scent of her father was permanently stained within her mind that was the very scent she followed now.

Bursting into the small clearing in which Olaf and Gady grazed; the roan filly didn't stop until her body literally collided with her much larger father. Stumbling back from the impact, Xio nearly fell onto her rump but managed to catch herself. "Father!" she cried out, tears running down her already soaked face. "Its mother! I think she is dead!" Without waiting on a reply, or what Gandy might have possibly said, Xio spun back around and began to race through the forest once more. He had to follow; she just knew he would!

The run seemed to take forever and Xio's endurance was beginning to wane, but she pushed on despite the fact her lungs felt like bursting and her legs threatening to collapse beneath her. Finally, Xio skidded to a stop along the edge of a giant sink hole. Peering over the edge, she saw her mother's body still laying where it had fallen with dirt scattered across her. A small whimper escaped the youth and she looked over her shoulder hoping her father was there.
