At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Each winter, the whole of Blossom Forest quieted and became covered in a blanket of white. Often, the inhabitants of the lands went to slumber, rising only to hunt when necessary. It was in these months that the boundaries between packs became hazy, as they went too long without being marked. Vargs grew thin, or perhaps fat, depending on their preference... But either way they grew slow and lazy. But Kahlan had known a different life and a different world whilst living in Blossom Forest, for always Saw Tooth had remained active. Under Moth, there was always peace but rarely quiet. The inhabitants remained active and numberable, and there was was always someone to talk to, someone to hunt with, someone new to meet. But now, the lands were still. Kahlan had called a pack meeting, to take count the current members of the pack, and to ensure them that the packlands were still safe and there was still someone to lead them, even in Cai's absence, but only Rodan had shown his face, Rodan and then a few varg.

Three. The great and feared pack of Saw Tooth had fallen to shambles. Without Moth, it seemed that they all were lost.

Her brother had not shown his face, but Kahlan had expected that. Henadin was off searching for Macaria, who had also gone missing. Gone, too, now though were most of Kahlan's close friends - Cai the Alphess, Channing, Daenerys... And now Kahlan the kind, the healer, the protector, the quiet, the calm, the loyal, the faithful, the pure of heart... Was no longer sure of her role in the world. She was never meant to be a leader, but she did not have an Alpha to serve. None were hurt within her lands... And now Kenshin, her love, had left her too. Was it her who had tainted all of those around her? Was it she who had the bad luck? Or was she simply drawn to those whose life's fell to pieces?

She had to leave. Kahlan's pads had pushed against the earth, her daggers digging into the soil hard, and she ran from her pack, ran to find answers to all of the questions she had. Kahlan did not know where she was headed until she got there - Staircase Falls. There was normally a rush of waters that provided enough distraction so as to clear her head. It would keep out all else so that she could not hear her own thoughts... So that she could finally put her mind straight. But she finally reached her destination, she found that she would not find any solace here. The falls were fully frozen over, and her desire for the roaring noise that would provide her silence only grew. She needed something to still the spinning world around her, she needed something to focus on, she needed all the sounds to stop, she wanted the silence, she wanted... She wanted... She...

Ka-ah... A lyrical voice called throughout the sky, beckoning for her presence. Suddenly, everything went silent. The scream in her head ceased, and she stilled her tremors. Tired, weary eyes searched for the speakers, and it was those same Suns that finally landed upon the princess. "Oh, Kira..."
