In the late 60s and early 70s, Simcoe County was full of dead and dying elms. More so then than now, we would sometimes get northern woodpeckers here in the winter, stripping the dying elms.

On January 5, 1975, I was lucky enough to be with a small party of observers who were delighted to find both a Black-backed Woodpecker (at Wye Marsh) and a Three-toed Woodpecker (in Oro Township). I don't suppose I'll be able to do that again, although it is always possible!
