FIRE BURNS WHERE IT FALLS

Maslakhat watched their narrow bodies tighten and contract with each word that came forth from his mouth, noticing in particular the mare’s stiffening at mention of loyalty. There was no doubt in his mind that such an assumption made the two of them uncomfortable. They may have been of similar blood, but they were still strangers. He would keep careful watch on them here until he was certain they would not become a threat.

“Yes,” he answered the mare, “in as much a sense as a mortal can steward over an expanse of land.”

And as the stallion continued, he snorted lightly.

“We are not at war—but there are those who do not look benevolently upon our kind. Arabians.”

Maslakhat paused, unwilling to divulge any more information on the subject. It was enough information him to consider them warned, and to see of they might take an interest in alerting him to any suspicious behavior they might witness.

“Keep an eye out,” he finished. “That’s all I ask.”
