This Broken-Down Fantasy

It was an interesting experience, getting both what she wanted and having her dreams shatter all at the same time. She had been so eager to get out of the Peak, explore and see the world! There had even been a night or two where she had dreamed of adventure with Impa. They had been the only dreams she could remember having. Now her mother had determined they were leaving the Peak and going to the Prairie. Why, exactly, Adelheid had no idea. Ever obedient as she was, she quietly followed behind her mother, sister, and Diamant. When they had first approached the waters separating the islands the filly had hesitated for just a moment before following boldly after her family. The waves were strong and the air was cold, but she had made it without complaint and stepped proudly from the waves. She held her head high and smiled, about to speak to her mother but frowned when Inka’s attention was instantly back on Diamant. The smile fell and her ears laced back in her hair again.

Adelheid did not begrudge the colt. She understood what had happened and vowed to be what she could for the foal she had come to think of as her brother. When Inka had told her to keep the boy’s parents a secret the young lady felt a rage flare in her chest. By keeping it a secret she felt as though she were doing him a great injustice. She had obeyed her mother’s wishes to not tell him the truth. But she would never keep it from him either. She loved him like a brother, felt the soul and emotional connection with him as she did with her sister. After all, they were technically of blood. But she never verbally referred to him as her sibling and side-stepped questions that would lead him to the answer. Should he ever ask out right though, she would not keep it from him.

Blue eyes watched sadly as Jetta wandered away from them. Adelheid nickered softly, too soft for anyone to hear. Once more she followed her mother, sighing to herself, ears falling once again to their natural position of back.

They approached another mare. Adelheid studied her closely but continued to stand just separate from the rest of her family. A heavy sigh was expelled from her chest when Inka introduced the colt but not her. She turned her head to the horizon they had come from. There, on shores far from here she let her dreams roam with a freedom she seemed to be unable to grasp.
