During the day, sentries guard the sleeping. When the sky is dark and the moon dances with the stars, this is when the real fun begins. Munashii Gekko's forest is the only haunt where you can find your local misfits all in one place. A land of the forbidden and forgotten, a place that is riddled with dangers of a whole different kind. The wolves here have long misplaced their rightful minds, and now live like creatures damned to prowl and lurk through the night. It's easy to lose yourself here, sanity was sure to fade away and wither; there was never anything normal about this nefarious nest. The silent threats that whispered in the breeze were enough to deter even the largest of demons around. It was not strength nor wit that ensured your survival here with Eric, and challengers would be torn down with a morose lethality - there was nothing left in his cold blue eyes that promised mercy to anyone who dared to overstep their worth. So, would you give up the sun for the moon and stars? Do you have enough vigor to become a well regarded sentry? - Put on a game face to step up and pass the sepia king's test or turn and leave before he catches your scent. You never know who wants to snack on your delicious blood in this forest.

But It’s Always There; My Dark Passenger

The air had grown frigidly cold as the female went through her first winter. She had been warned that it would not always be nice and warm as it had been when she was born, but so far she hated the cold. Her pelt was not as thick as some of the vargs that lived here, and she felt that she was always cold no matter what. The only times that she ever felt warm was when she was in her den. Her den was small and cozy, just big enough for herself and it did not take long for her body heat to warm it up and make it very comfortable. Every morning that she awoke she would grumble to herself about the harsh cold that she would have to fight through that day. She just hoped that spring would come soon and warm up the lands and make it more enjoyable once more.

Shasta was still young and growing, still learning how the world worked and how others worked. She was very similar to her father in many senses, and looked up t Akuji like she did to no other. Really he was her only companion and the only one she hung out with and spoke to. It was not that she did not like others, it was just that her taste was unique, something she learned from her father. Those that were different, those that were not kalaks, were weird to her and not to be trusted. Luckily most of the vargs within Cold Summers were indeed maned wolves, but there were still those few that came here that were of a different breed. She wished that they would just leave and let Cold Summers be a pure pack, one that would consist of only the best of the best of breeds. But that was not for her to say or pass judgement on, that was for Caspian, their alpha, to decide. And he seemed not to have any issues with letting any old breed come and call Cold Summers home. But that did not mean that the female had to befriend them, so she just ignored them all to the best that she could.

One morning, as she was fighting with herself about whether or not she would leave her warm den yet or put it off and stay inside for a little bit longer, she heard her name being called from outside. She recognized the vocals to be her father’s, and a smile creeped upon her features as she pushed her form out into the cold. A shiver went through her bodice as she blinked in the sunlight, adjusting to the light that had been absent in her much darker den. Her audettes perked as Akuji said they were going out of Cold Summers today to go on an adventure. He did not elaborate more than that and was already leaving. Her smaller paws followed him, crunching in the snow that had not yet been disturbed. Some days her father was talkative and would tell her details of what they were doing, and other days he was silent. She had learned at a young age that no amount of asking or begging would get him to tell her what they were doing if he didn’t want her to know at the time, so she had learned to be patient and wait.

As the pair of kalaks walked through the trees, they remained silent. As much as Shasta wanted to know where they were going and what they were doing for the day, she remained silent and waited to see if he would enlighten her. The male did not though, and remained silent for the whole trip. Shasta’s attention was turned to a sharp scent of another pack, one that she had never been to before. Akuji had stressed the importance of knowing other packs, even if they had nothing to do with Cold Summers, so she knew the scent to be Munashii Gekko’s. They recently had gotten a new alpha, and she was wondering if that was what had brought them here today. Maybe they were to speak to the new alpha on Caspian’s behalf. But when Akuji’s vocals swept through the air, it was not for the alpha that he was calling for, but for someone else. Shasta waited patiently, remaining standing on her tall stilts and alert, to see who would come to them.
