At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Titan bid adieu to Akina. Their first stop had been at the lake and after discussing some ideas of what they wanted next, she suggested splitting up and checking around at other lands, maybe even outside of Blossom Forest if it came to it. They had been through a lot in and out of Blossom Forest. It seemed like they always ended up back here, but maybe it was more like a check point and not actually their final destination? He didn’t know what their future had in store but he did know he would make the most of their time in Blossom Forest, even if it did end up as temporary. After agreeing to meet back up at the lake at a designated time he gave her chocolate colored muzzle a sloppy kiss and then they parted.

The tall brute decided to head towards the no man lands – the areas that were owned by no wolf and that no wolf would allow another to own. It was kind of an odd, silent agreement among canines that these public places arose and stayed protected as ownerless within Blossom Forest. Titan thought it must have been some push from packless strays to keep lands that they could freely roam in. There were open areas and landmarks that pack wolves and strays enjoyed and made use of in equal amounts, so it must have been easy enough to forge an agreement with founding pack leaders back when Blossom Forest was hosting canines for the first time. The no man territories did pop up in other lands that Titan had been to, not always in an effort to maintain civility with strays, but usually land that packs simply didn’t want. Either areas so deserted that they were useless to the packs or so popular that it would be too difficult to maintain ownership. In all his time at Blossom Forest he had never known a wolf to try and claim those spaces and even if it wasn’t common knowledge that was spoken of, the fact that these lands were to remain unclaimed seemed ingrained in the societies of Blossom. Titan, like all the other canines here, subconsciously accepted this fact.

Having been in Blossom Forest since he was a young pup Titan had been practically everywhere that the land had to offer. He had his favorite spots and some he never cared to revisit more than once or twice. His long legs moved him along at a quick pace, and he tried to satisfy the itch of a question that kept digging at his thoughts. Where am I going… and no, this wasn’t meant in a large, existential sort of way. It was literal, in the moment, where was he actually going? Even though he set his mind on no man’s land, that wasn’t as simple as heading away from pack lands. Like most places, the packs were laid in various areas within Blossom Forest, and the ownerless lands were intermingled between the packs. He still had to pass next to pack lands to go almost anywhere. He traveled following the romance river away from the lake, and once in a while he had to cross it to make sure he wasn’t passing through pack territories that might lie on either side. At one point he came to part of the river where a trail broke off between the trees towards the well-known hunting grounds of Blossom, Prey Plateau. Just thinking about it made his stomach start grumbling. He and Akina probably should have eaten before splitting up. Neither had anything more than field mice and the odd rabbit or two the entire trip into Blossom Forest and he was feeling it now. Ultimately he decided against it, though, knowing he would have more luck landing large prey once he was with his mate once again.

Still following the river, he eventually came up to a landmark in the middle of the river itself. This place was known, fittingly, as Staircase Falls. It was more or less how it sounded, a stone staircase climbing up through the river and creating a cascade of water down it. It was a tall staircase and created a gradual decline in altitude for the river as opposed to a sudden drop like a traditional waterfall would be. He had enjoyed the occasional visit to this area in the past. It wasn’t one of his special spots but it wasn’t one he hated, either. A happy medium. He was okay with that. He thought about continuing on past it, but his green eyes detected movement just below the water’s surface. Fish… He couldn’t help his tongue running across the edges of his lips in anticipation for the food that he hadn’t even consciously decided he would catch. His stomach began its grumbling once again and that decided it. He turned from the trail and stepped out into the river, moving in an arch towards the fall and then back away from it. He was essentially herding the fish to collect in one area. The scaly creatures did as he wanted, and he made an arch back the other way, making them swim towards the stones of the falls. Fish were predictable. That’s why they were easy to catch. It wasn’t common to see a wolf catching fish, but that was because it wasn’t practical, not difficult. A wolf couldn’t possibly live off of river fish alone; they would never catch all they needed before starving. But it was good for a snack and could keep a wolf going between large kills. Plus it was rather tasty.

After pinning the group of fish between himself and the stairs it only took a few more minutes before he had two decent sized white bass fish on the shore, ready for consumption. Titan looked up at the staircase and spotted a large stone about three-fourths of the way up with a mostly flat surface that jutted out enough from the water to make a nice platform for dining. He took the two slippery corpses in his scarlet maw, struggling for a moment to get a good grip on both, and began his ascent up the staircase. Most of it was easy going, but the last jump up to the platform was going to be a little trickier because of the way it jutted out over the water. He could have kept climbing smaller stairs around it then jumped down, and he even stopped to consider this option, but decided against it. His legs were plenty long enough to make the jump. And they did, but because of the slick surface his landing wasn’t solid and he fell forward. He caught himself but in his effort both fish escaped his jaws. They hit the ground at his feet, the bottom one staying where it landed and the top on bouncing off the bottom fish and lifelessly jumping over the edge. Blood Titan watched with wide eyes for a moment, for whatever reason so caught up in seeing what happened he didn’t reflexively reach forward to try to catch it.

“…Fuck”

He approached the edge of the stone platform and looked over. The fish had fallen and a mischievous smile crept momentarily onto his kissers as he watched the corpse bounce against the head of a wolf below and then land in water in front of them, subsequently splashing the wolf in the face. He checked his face back into a mostly casual but serious expression as he didn’t want to be misinterpreted and have the other wolf thinking the fishy assault had been on purpose.
