Lake Simcoe and Kempenfelt Bay is frozen solid as of February 24th but it has not been ice covered all winter. It froze first on January 22nd and all the lake was frozen solid on January 27th then warm rains came on January 31st and lake opened up again on February 2nd. Then it was -31 on February 13th and the lake froze over again on February 14th. It was +10 on February 20th and lake opened up again on February 21st then with - 10 degrees it froze over again on February 24th. So the Lake and Bay may be frozen solid now but it has not been like that all winter which is why you are seeing kingfishers and some species of gulls that are normally not here in winter.
