Greater White Fronted geese Posted on March 12, 2016 at 08:29:28 PM by Cliff Rummenie
Today at Tiny Marsh, off the boardwalk observation platform, two Greater White Fronted geese were observed. I was speaking later with a birder at the parking lot, who knew about them but hadn't yet seen them, who heard a rumor that one was a hybrid between Canada and Greater White Fronted goose. You can clearly see a larger light patch on the bird on the left. Note also the reduced amount of white toward the face, compared to the goose on the right. My Princeton guide for Birds of Europe would make me believe they are of the albifrons race. The bird on the right, a typical adult; the bird on the left, displaying most of the characteristics of a 1st winter bird, with the remnant of the "bean" a juvenile has, barely visible. But the Princeton guide does not display such a large lighter cheek area.
