This Broken-Down Fantasy

Adelheid had been enjoying her time on the island. It was secluded in the forests and her black frame hid easily among the shadows of the trees. She did not know if there had been other horses present on the island, nor did she really even care. It was the first time in her life she had been both physically and mentally alone and she had come to embrace it. For the first time the fires in her heart had cooled and she had been able to restabilize and think without the influences of others guiding her thoughts down their own paths. She was able to see clearly through her own foggy lense and choose the paths of her own choices. It was a coming of age long overdue. At last, with a snort and a shake of her head she trotted from the forests of Luthien and back onto the beach. Her grin was spread wide and she cantered through the small waves. Sand flew up to cling to her black coat as she ran, enjoying the power with which she was able to do so.

Her time in the water done and her sides heaving with heavy breathing she stole another freedom from the world around her and rolled joyfully in the sandy beach. Suddenly she was a dark tan mare instead of the stark black of her mother. Still beaming with her pleasure at being able to do whatever she wanted she once again shouted into the sky, her voice high in the whinny. So enraptured by the feeling she almost missed the approach of another horse coming from down the beach. Curious she watched until she recognized who the stranger was.

The anger burst into her with a force that was surprising even to her. Of all the stallions, mares, or what have you to run across in this solitary land it had to be him.

You! She shrieked over the crashes of waves at her back. Looking over him it was apparent he had taken time and regained some of his strength. Her ears flicked back in a moment of uncertainty. Would she be able to match him if he chose to rise against her. Passion burned through her. It did not matter. She had her rights to freedom and she had just claimed them with her ability to move without the consent and control of others. This man had defied her and the power and strength that was within her. She held her head high, blue eyes flashing with the blaze that flared within her. If he dared rise against her again she would match him blow for blow. Here she did not have the mountains to back her up, but she did not have the Lagoon to defy her. She glared at him, drawing herself up. You have come to a sorry lonely land on a sorry lonely island. No one and nothing. You have nothing.
