The sound of approaching hooves stopped me in my own tracks. My solitary roamings could have only lasted so long. I should have known those of the Bay would have come to investigate any differences in their land, with or without my call of peace. It was both surprising and soothing to see the approach of the women I had met what seemed like so long ago. It brought breath to my being to know that somewhere on this island the lives of those who truly resided here, remained.
My own pale nose reached out to that of Maziel. I remembered her kindness, her desire for adventure, and interesting in learning about the world around her even though she could not see it. I returned the touch of her nose and breathed deep her scent. I may not have been a part of her herd, nor technically welcome on this island, but she and her sister were still a part of this world, a part of this land, and a part of me, my life, and my (though distant) family. Speaking of family, without removing myself too far from Maziel, I looked to her sister and was taken aback by the look on her face.
The smile she wore was more than I had seen in her life. Whereas Maziel had been kind and sweet, Mariael had been protective and snappy. Maziel stepped away and I turned my full attention to her sister. I could feel my own lips turn up towards her and I bowed my head in respect and honor at her friendly words. And you, Mariael and Maziel. Me head turned to Maziel as she questioned me, a single heavy breath of regret snorting from my nose. The island Luthien, and the Prairie. My father took us there before he left. I have been watching over my sister. Shamwari has been kind to us, giving us… a place… But hardly a purpose, hardly a home. Ostara had come to feel a comfort in the long grasses, but I longed for more.
