They‘re Catching Onto Us

They said we'd burn so bright.
We burn this city and go.

Paradiso wanted to snuff out his embarrassing comment about his father and move on as quickly as possible from it. But this strange kept bringing it back up, making the colt's heat beat so fast in his chest that the rushing blood in his veins began to make him feel hot and agitated all over. He was antsy because of this, and pranced in place as the three continued to chat. In all honesty, Paradiso didn't know how to answer Nuru's last question about his father. He'd never met the stallion, nor did he have any idea where he and the rest of the herd went. "I don't know. But it's OK. I've got my mum and my brother here still." Was all he said in response, smiling weakly through the darkness. It was true, he still had a large family. He knew he had a sister too, Nova, whom he hadn't met yet. He was reminded by Evaline all the time that he should be grateful for what he did have. But being a wistful young boy, he couldn't help but daydream about his father and his whereabouts.

Paradiso followed cautiously with the two other horses as he moved slowly toward the Prairie's border with the forest. Instinct told him this was a bad idea. Talking so casually with a full grown stallion who'd snuck into someone else's home wasn't a good idea. Escorting him to the forest where they were forbidden to go wasn't a good idea. Straying further from the herd to do so in the middle of the night wasn't a good idea. But Ostara seemed unmoved by the entire situation. Instead, she embraced it. Clearly she saw it as a opportunity to get what she wanted -- to see the forest -- without anyone knowing.

The boy's dark ear lobes remained flicked forward and at attention as he tried his best to stay focused on the story their strange friend was telling them, but he was too distracted by the night's sounds and darkness. Anything could leap out at them here. A coyote. A snake. Paradiso stayed as close to Ostara as possible, sometimes rubbing his chest and shoulder against her hind end when he began to worry to much. He stopped, however, just as they reached the entrance to a small thicket. He whimpered to Ostara in a frantic way, the colt not even capable of forming words in an effort to stop her. But not wanting to be left alone in the dark, he forced himself to move forward after her, hovering close as they moved down the trails.

"This is really not a good idea guys. I think we should go back." He hailed one last time onto what he already knew were deaf ears.
