Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Someone tell me, tell me I survived.

"Yeah, they're all gone. Well, except Evaline. But the rest of them. Poof."I say indifferently. I'd known the mares in Valentine's herd, my own mother was one of them, but they'd chosen to stick with him. That didn't bother me. I study Nephilim and notice how he squirms at the mention of Valentine. I didn't realize he knew of him. But then again, he'd been a leader of a territory far longer than me. I shrugged it off and lazily lowered my head to nip a scratch above my knee.

When Nephilim mentioned his children, I looked at him with a sort of confused look. I pranced in place for a minute, elated for him but also thoroughly surprised by this new information. It sort of blew my mind that Nephilim was a father. Maybe it's just me but I felt we were still too young to have all these foals running around. But clearly not. "So wait a minute. You've got a kid, And a kid that's old enough to run a territory? We're getting old dude." I say, reaching to him to bump my muzzle to his. "But that's great. I bet you're pretty proud."

This got my mind a whirlin'. Paradiso was old enough now to go on to his next venture. With Samhain around, I didn't need them both lurking in the Prairie. Perhaps he'd want to join Nova in the Bay? It sounds like he could learn a thing or two from Neph and his clearly impressive fillies. "Hey, I actually have a favor to ask of you." I say, lazily cocking one hind leg and jutting the opposite hip high into the air. Nephilim clearly wasn't as relaxed as I was, but I blamed that on whatever lingering feelings he had from the altercation that happened before I ran into him. "I've got this half-brother. He's a good kid but needs something to do. I can't keep him holed up in the Prairie for much longer. You think he could be of use to you and your girl in the Bay? By all means, please put him to work."

Before I could get an answer though, the tides of this conversation changed with little warning. I'd known that something about this entire interaction seemed off. I don't know where Nephilim's been and why he left. But it's none of my business. I too have left this place and come back, so who am I to judge anyway? But when the spotted stallion confirms that Vita Nova was here, she was around, in the Crossing, likely by herself, the tone of entire discussion changes immediately. I could feel my heart beginning to race inside my chest, the sudden rush of blood propelled from it sending a heat wave across my body. I stomp a front leg into the earth just to move. My red lobes flick forward and back, as if on repeat, as I consider what to say next.

"Well, I'm happy she's alive too," I say, repeating his own words only this time with a certain cynicism in my voice. He'd confirmed everything I needed to know. He left and left her here alone. He had no idea if she was alive until today, until he ran into her by happenstance. He had abandoned her. My sister. I don't want to be mad with Nephilim. Hell, he's one of my oldest friends. But my sister was involved now and that changed everything. "Do you know where she was headed?"

I take a step toward him now, my heavy cranium held high over my withers so I stared down my nose at him. I wasn't so relaxed anymore. "Neph, you know I've got to go find her now. But this conversation isn't over."

And with that, I turned quickly on my haunches and cantered off in the direction of the meadow.
