While I'm not qualified to say for certain, this appears to be much more aligned with what confirmation we see in a cougar. There also appears to be the white face, chin, and mouth areas of the mountain lion. What I'm really focused upon is the hind quarter, rump, muscle area. That stands out like a very strong, and fast ambush predator, which yes Bobcats are but, that leg is far more muscular than any bobcat photos I've seen. Also. The article claims that its a bobcat in its summer coat but, after looking, the striped pattern remains prevalent albeit somewhat subdued from their beautiful winter coats stripes. This photo shows no markings at all. Just that signature beautiful color solid coat of the cougar. The ridge of the back. The swagger walk. Cmon. This is totally a lion!!! The short tail is some evidence that I'm not able to make fit the mountain lion's makeup. This leaves the only doubt that remains but, do we know if the citizen who got this image, released the photo directly or, did the DEM get it first and crop out some of the tail since a bobcat has a bobbed tail, that is all they need with a grainy photo to say, "see. Totally a bobcat". Hunting is a billion dollar industry and if the Eastern Cougar is suddenly made known, and known to be threatened/endangered since it was technically "extinct"... The industry would be shut down for 50-100yrs from the Mississippi to the Atlantic, from the state of Mississippi to Maine... Keeping the eastern cougar "extinct" keeps a multi-billion outdoor industry like camping, hunting and fishing, going for years to come. I get it but, this is a mountain lion!!! Replies:
