Brienne held the position for as long as she could. Although she was overcome by emotion, she was still very much aware of the gentle warmth and pressure as Shamwari laid his neck across hers. To be so physically close and vulnerable with another horse, even just for those few moments, made the mare tremble. His scent was strong in her nose, but it was not unpleasant, and in the seconds before it all became too much Brienne thought to herself that she could grow used to the sensation of touching Shamwari.

When she finally pulled away, she held her head low and averted her eyes. This time she did not wipe away the tears that stained her cheeks, but her face nonetheless burned hot like a furnace. She reflected on what Shamwari had said: that he wished he had a name for her. Just as equally, she wished she could tell him what it was. Once, she would have relied on her best friend to introduce her, for as much as Brienne had been Selyse's eyes, Selyse had been her voice. They had been inseparable, and completely dependent on each other, but those days were in the past and would not help her now.

Then an idea struck her, and the skinny little mare's expression brightened. She turned back to Shamwari with a new light in her eye and a faint smile on her lips, and reached forward to nudge him on the shoulder. When she pulled back, she looked at him expectantly, then gave him another nudge for good measure. You, she wanted to say. Name me. Name me whatever you want. It was just a word, after all. And she would always hold her true name close to her heart.
