They�re Catching Onto Us

They said we'd burn so bright.
We burn this city and go.

Paradiso was glad it was as dark as it was so Ostara and their new friend couldn't see just how scared he was. If he stopped moving his whole body would shake, from his rump to his ankles to the poll between his ears. The young appaloosa stallion was an absolute nervous wreck. So he hovered as close to Ostara as possible, so close that he could feel her body heat radiating against him as he often pressed his shoulder into her rump, if only to remind him that she was there, his braver, stronger counterpart. Paradiso wouldn't dare look back behind him, for fear of seeing something terrible happen, like the trail closing up or a monster tearing off after them. His ear lobes swiveled this way and that, taking in the sounds of their three separate pairs of hoof beats on the forest's ground, the sounds of the brush bending as their bodies passed through it, and the insects and night owls that made the occasional buzz or hoot as they passed by. Part of the young boy wished he never woke up and stumbled after Ostara at all tonight.

But another part of him was alive and enjoying this, even if he couldn't see it. He always truly enjoyed his adventures with Ostara, even if he rarely showed it. And he couldn't help but think of his father now, in the wake of his awkward misidentification of Nuru. What would Valentine do? He knew his dad was brave. So maybe he should try to be a little more brave too.

The familiar scents of the Prairie were beginning to dull and Paradiso fully assumed they had passed by the border. "Does anyone live here?" He whispered to his two friends, his crystal blue eyes wide and searching through the darkness for their familiar faces. "Sham says someone new is here."
