I am the razor in the hands of your heart;
And I am the razor in the hands of God.
The buckskin mare's calm and cool demeanor in the wake of her venomous and clearly hurting quip only enrages Evaline further. Part of her wants to lash out at Avangeline, bite down on the fleshy side of her neck if only to show her distaste for her company and exert her dominance. But Evaline doesn't move. The rage passes through her almost as quickly as it bubbled up, and now her wide brown eyes are covered in a salty layer of moisture. Again she looks away from Avangeline, not wanting her to see her in such a condition, but there's nothing she can do to stop it. She's utterly miserable, heartbroken and grieving the life she left behind in the Prairie. She was old, too old, to be starting over, to be trying to make it in such a harsh terrain. She didn't want to be away from the family she created, even if they were the root of making her feel this way. She didn't choose any of this.
Evaline swallows hard after several minutes span where the only thing breaking the silence between them is her sobbing. She tosses her chiseled head wildly as the tears finally die down, their salty trails staining the golden yellow fur along her face in a darker mustard color. She doesn't know what to say to Avangeline, who is still standing here after all that. "I'm not OK." She managed to say, looking at her now in a neutral way. It was rare for Evaline to be in such a vulnerable state. The mare would never apologize, in her eyes, everything she did was justified, even this. But Avangeline was experiencing a brief break in usual tough exterior. Gabbar had certainly not seen her like this.
"I don't need your help. Or your sympathy." She spat, her face hardening again and her golden tipped lobes flicking back against her poll. With that, she turned swiftly on her haunches and headed back down the sandy slopes toward the shoreline. This time she had every intention of swimming away from Salem.
