DANCE OF THORNS

The pounding of hooves echoed off the land. Jasiri's ears flicked nervously as she wondered what giant she woke, and after a minute or so a behemoth burst from a nearby group of trees, charging at her. Her ears laid against her skull as she took a step back. Right about the time he recognized her, she recognized him.

It wasn't just any behemoth. It was the behemoth.

As his rage cooled, she felt a pang of guilt. The situation was so similar to the one she put Nuru in that she flinched immoderately as some of the pebbles bounced off of her neck and head. Her ears didn't raise back up until he was right in front of her. Her eyes trailed over the white stripe on his face and the sabino markings splattered across his lower half. She didn't respond for long time, trying to tame the emotions welling up inside her. Namely, the anger she felt as he mentioned the beautiful land's name.

Her rage boiled in the pit of her stomach. This land, this hopeless, cursed land was the cause of her bad luck. She could feel it quivering as she stared past the behemoth and over the landscape. This was where her old herd stallion was born. This was the place he dragged his herd through the ocean for. And the one stallion she had even considered breeding with on these islands owned it.

Her gaze settled on his white striped face again. "I didn't realize you lived here," she tried to swallow the bitter taste in her mouth. Her rage had turned into fear and nervousness, eating her alive. She didn't have to go further than the beach. As long as she stayed on this pebbled beach, where she could hear and see and smell the ocean, she would be fine. But if she walked onto that land, her luck would be poisoned.

"I, ah," she stuttered as she realized her gaze had slipped back to stare at the range, her skin crawling at the sight. She forced herself to focus on the bay draft. "I am looking for a stallion. His name is Nuru." Her voice didn't carry as much heft as usual. She felt like a foal stuck in a giant's body, seeing the world from a tiny perspective again. She had to leave this land as soon as possible.

She shifted her weight and flicked one ear back towards the ocean to reassure herself. She could only hope the behemoth wouldn't judge her too harshly for her behavior.
