I am sure you will be an asset to our herd.

Avangeline lifted her long, angular face, eyes glowing and ears pressed forward. It was nice to have so many other individuals trust in her so fully and to have such faith in her. After having spent years on crossing in an existential crisis of sorts and feeling as if she didn’t know her place it was nice to finally be told she had a place and she was important to it. Yet her moment of boosted self-confidence was placed behind her as Valve spoke more and Avangeline’s attention was absorbed in the mare.

She was impressed by the parents Valve had come from and they reminded her very briefly of the parents she thought she remembered.

It was Gabbar who spoke next and Avangeline’s ears flicked toward him, her eyes following right after. She listened to him for a moment but his attention redirected hers toward Evaline and she glanced toward the mare, watching her with the same genuine curiosity. Avangeline had not yet been a mother, both because she was too afraid to raise a child when she didn’t know who she was herself and also because she seemed to fight the very instinct which told her procreation didn’t require knowledge or trust of the father who’d sire a foal. If Avangeline ever thought to have a child it would be with a stallion she knew and trusted; she wondered if Evaline felt the same.

The older palomino mare spoke and revealed she had not one, but four children. Avangeline wondered where they were now, if they were on the chain of islands just as Evaline was. Before her mind could comprehend the curious nature of learning Evaline had children, Avangeline was instead taken by surprise of learning destruction had once been here and Evaline knew of it. “You weren’t there when the islands crumbled, were you?” She asked, her eyes wide and bright, thinking of how frightening it must have been when such a thing happened. “That sounds frightening.” She echoed her thoughts, glancing out over the sun dappled oasis and imaging it being swallowed whole by the ocean.
