DANCE OF THORNS

Her tundra was quiet tonight.

Jasiri's naps throughout the night had been briefer than normal. The black mare hadn't been causing much trouble and Areo Hotah had returned from his patrols, but she still could not sleep easy. She finally gave up and started to move towards the ocean at a slow trot. The moon shone down on her blonde locks, and for once she peered up towards the sky to glance at the bright stars. She wondered what it would be like to swim through the horizon.

Her winter coat had finally grown in enough where the silver mare didn't shudder constantly. Now her skin only twitched and her scars only itched when the icy wind swept through. Since the herd had been mainly staying by the craggy mountains to block the currents, she had felt much more prepared for the winter than she had at the beginning of the fall. Although snow coated now the ground, she was able to dig out the grass without too much frustration.

Her ears flicked at the crunching of snow and the sound of a deep voice. She had gotten so lost in her thoughts she had completely missed the nearby draft slowly making their way onto her land. She picked up her pace, her ears straining forward. Had rumors about her herd begun to circulate the islands? Perhaps that draft Inka had spread her message like she asked.

She didn't stop until she was only a pace or two away from the stranger. She took a moment to regard the scar stretching across his face and his damp and muddy coat. The scar took her a bit aback, but she smoothed the lines of surprise on her face before she could offend him too greatly. The ocean surged behind him forcefully. She wondered what she looked like each time she pulled herself out of the dark waters.

"Habari," she greeted, "welcome to my tundra. What brings you here?" She hoped he wanted to join her herd. A horse with such a scar was a fighter for sure, and she could use all the help she could get if the bay herd starting causing trouble. She wasn't expecting them to do anything until spring. It seemed they had assumed winter would take care of her, and it was her intent to prove them wrong.
