Officer Lois Marrero Memorial
IP: 173.169.119.2

Dear TPD Family,

We are pleased to announce that District 1 is getting a memorial garden on
October 11, 2016!

It has been a dream that was 2 years in the making, and will now finally come to fruition thanks to the support of many people. We will be honoring the sacrifice of Officer Lois Marrero who, as you all know, was shot and killed by a bank robber as she was attempting to apprehend him. At the time (2001), her squad planted the beautiful magnolia tree by the officer entrance on the west side of District 1. It continues to grow and thrive in this place of honor for all of us to see it as we start and end our shifts.

The new memorial garden will be a place of remembrance, but it will also serve as a place for fellowship among our officers and staff, a place to celebrate the milestones we make in a career, and a quiet place to remember our fallen heroes fondly. The plan calls for a courtyard with a center piece planter that looks like a Spanish style fountain. Tampa Preparatory School National Arts Honor Society is creating an art piece that will depict the great things about this city, and its West Tampa heritage. All of the irrigation, electrical, lighting, and landscaping materials have been donated by enormously supportive businesses and citizens whose generosity humbles us.

On the day of the dedication, everything will be installed except for the landscaping and Tampa Prep art piece. We need all of the help we can get to place and plant the landscaping, and place the artwork before 1430 hours - this is when our dedication ceremony will happen. There will be breakfast and drinks provided in the morning and lunch provided at the time of the ceremony.

From the moment we are sworn in, we become part of the TPD family. When we lose one of our own, we always come together, as family does, and remember our fallen - but we know that the lives of our heroes are so much bigger than the moments of their deaths. Please, let's unite again in a celebration of the amazing life of Lois Marrero, and the amazing history of District 1 as we dedicate this garden to all officers who protect this city - past, present, and future.
