say not that honor is the child of boldness

m e n k h e t

voices echoed in the hollows between trees, against the boulders and rocks strewn on the forest floor, over the trickling of the springs seeping ice cold water beneath the snow. her ears flattened momentarily before fluttering upward toward the source of the sound. she was expecting one visitor, not two. she moved at a jaunty trot, weaving deftly between the skirts of trees, toward the sound and scent of the masculine creatures the voices belonged to. the sunlight played at the edges of the pine needles that grazed her sides as she passed through the pines and she opened her velvety soft nostrils wide to breathe in their sweet clear scent. she was confident in manner, business-like in addressing this newest disturbance of her home and as she neared the pair she watched for a moment in silence. she recognized the younger of two as paradiso but could not place the older more confident creature. peaking behind a curtain of pine boughs she watched him, wondering how to address the situation. he didn't appear to be threatening the younger stallion at all and so she decided that she would introduce herself and try to befriend the creature. these days she could use all the friends the world had to offer.

with a nicker she announces herself, slinking from the trees sliding down a small bank with all the grace and deftness of a feline. she nods at paradiso, knowing he was likely to recognize her dark form and then sidled up next to older stallion. she is confident and cool, with all the possessiveness of her home a lead stallion would exhibit. as her dark hard eyes take him in she can't help but wonder if this stallion would try to take her home away as the last had. she notices the scars and scuffs on his back just as she is sure he will see those on hers. her voice is low but strong and clear when she introduces herself, circling the pair slowly.

i am menkhet naturally..... the real question is, friend, who are you? and what do you intend to do in my forest?

she stands to face the eldest now, waiting and watching. she must be careful not to make more enemies and something akin to curiosity encourages her not to be to hasty to dismiss the stallion before her. she is grateful to have paradiso at her side, knowing that he would eventually be comfortable here and hopefully happy to be so close to the prairie. it also made her happy to think that nuru would have some company. her herd may be small but she cared as deeply for it and her home as any stallion could his.
