I live in manomet too and I had an experience in 2010/2011 that was amazing and yet completely horrifying at the same time. I encountered something huge and fierce in the woods at night and only caught a small glimpse of its hind quarters. But the hiss I heard, and the intensity of the projection in it, within feet of me, is something I will never soon forget. I still think about it to this day, every day, in fact. And Ill always wonder if I encountered an animal many would say was impossible, in this region.
You are so lucky and blessed because you know what you saw...you sound certain of it,,and from a distance, its sounds like was safe to admire it for the beautiful animals that they are. I almost became lunch, Im pretty sure..lol.
In the years following my experience, I became determined to find out, for sure, what animal I was unknowingly in the presence of, and within feet of, that night. I haven't yet arrived at a point where I can say I know for sure what it was, but the idea that it 'could' have been a mountain lion is beyond comprehension for me. I wish I knew. It eats away at me. Not knowing.
I have taken up an interest, understandably, in the years that followed, in becoming more educated about the animals that live among us. I have seen many of our animals up close. Deer often grazed across the street in a forest, skunks, pesky but adorable raccoons became regular visitors, I have seen foxes, possums. One even faked dead on top of my trash barrel one night as I startled him. I have had the misfortune of losing a few of my beloved pet rabbits to a vicious and determined mink, who stood his ground to me, face to face...within about a foot of me. Who knew such an adorable-looking animal could be so viscous. I used to hear so many coyotes at night that I decided to download a coyote calling app and played it loudly from my front steps at night. To my amazement, it worked and I saw two coyotes up close! Once they realized they had been duped, they walked away...a little embarrassed I think...lol. A good friend of mine trapped a fisher cat once. So Ive heard all their sounds, but the sound of the hiss I heard that night still resonates with me today, the volume, intensity and anger behind that hiss is hard to forget! and I'll always be left to wonder what it really was. I wish I could have seen more of the animal or the tip of his tail. Then I could know beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Anyways, I have a trail cam and if I could ever figure the darn thing out, maybe I'll strap it to a tree and you never know, maybe she or he will stroll by. thanks for sharing.
