Valve twisted one of her ears around when she heard her name aloud from a familiar voice. Gabbar approached her, seemingly as restless as she was tonight. There was a sense of urgency in his voice and so she granted him an audience without protest. After all, when the sun came up they were going to the Lagoon side by side to take back Evaline and crumble the constitution of those pathetic bachelors.

When he spoke of the desert, she listened carefully to what he knew. Yes, they were indeed wary, but that was just fine. Their independence suited them, just as the Dunes’ motives were personal to its own borders.

“They are no threat, but as you said, they are quite wary of us,” Valve turned to Gabbar and explained. “I know of their leader, Orhan. I was there when his mother died.”

She paused a moment, keeping the bit of information on exactly how and why El Aran had died to herself. As much as Valve didn’t particularly mind if Orhan found out what she did, she knew Gabbar was right in the sense that if he knew, he would certainly not be as amenable to sharing a border with them.

“He has an inherent distrust in purebreds, so we are fighting an uphill battle. For now, I think it’s best if we allow him the privilege of managing his own affairs.”

Valve studied Gabbar’s face, looking for any sign of discontent or disagreement.

“And we will continue to manage our own. If the day comes when we need something from him, or vice versa, then we can discuss more specific terms.”

The black mare stopped walking and looked at Gabbar carefully, wondering why he chose to approach her with this now. Perhaps he was planning on making some kind of deal with their neighboring stallion—whatever his motives, Valve needed to know.

“Is there something you want from him Gabbar?”
