still waters run deep

At the sound of a nicker, Brienne froze.

She held her breath, stifling her sobs into silence, as though she was a helpless fawn that had been found by a slavering-mouthed wolf and was waiting for the unavoidable. She knew by his voice that it was Shamwari, and expected a multitude of questions to come tumbling from his lips at the sight of her so pitiful and upset. Instead, he was as silent as she was, and she flinched at the gentle touch on her withers.

They remained like that for a few moments, and Brienne found her breathing begin to steady. Eventually she lifted her face from the earthen pillow on which it rested, and turned her head to toss a shy side-glance at the chestnut stallion who stood over her. At first she could hardly look him directly in the eye, ashamed as she was of her dirty, tear-stained face, but then she saw that something was wrong. Shamwari was not himself either. He looked tired and empty, as though he had spread himself too thin and had little left to give.

Brienne's tearful blue eyes gazed at him more steadily, trying to read him and wondering what had happened. Then she began to feel guilty, and the feeling sat like a cold stone, heavy in the pit of her stomach. She had been so emotionally isolated lately, so wrapped up in her own problems, that she had not seen the dark cloud that had slowly settled over the chestnut stallion.

Fresh, hot tears pricked at her eyes, threatening to spill, and she looked away for a moment to gather herself. Then at last she stood, turning her dirty face toward Shamwari but once again finding herself not quite able to meet his eye. She gazed downwards, at their hooves in the dirt so close together, and let a few more tears fall. Despite the cool spring air she felt hot, and the silence was thick between them.

Earlier, she had not sure she would be able to forgive him for sending Paradiso away, but now that he was right in front of her, and it was clear they were both hurting deeply for one reason or another, she was not certain she could hold it against him any longer.

With a whimper, she stepped forward and leaned into the warmth of his shoulder.
