still waters run deep

As Brienne listened to Shamwari, a mix of emotions whirled through her like a hurricane, rocking the foundations of everything she knew. She leaned into him as he spoke, wetting his warm shoulder with tears, and feeling his pain as though it were her own. The pain sat in her chest and radiated through every inch of her body, making her ache with shock and grief and compassion. The gulf between them was no more; she felt as though their bubbles had become one, as though time and space was frozen and nothing else mattered anymore.

When the chestnut stallion finished, Brienne pulled her crooked nose away from his shoulder to look him in the eye. Her blue eyes were ringed red and lined with exhaustion, but there was a new gleam in them, a gleam that shone from their depths and communicated everything she could not say. Had she been able to speak, she would have told him right then how she understood what he felt, how she had lost loved ones, how their memory haunted her to this day, how she could not look at snow without remembering how fate had betrayed her, how she would always remember the cold as it sank into her bones and turned their bodies to ice... and how she blamed herself for it.

Had she been able to speak, she would have told him right then that she loved him, and that she would do anything to take his pain away. She could do no such thing, however, at least with words, and so Brienne lifted her head to touch her nose and lips to Shamwari's face. She brushed her muzzle across the firm planes of his skin, tracing the line of his jaw and lipping the soft area behind his ear. She inhaled his scent and pressed her skinny little body a little closer to him, soaking up his warmth and revelling in the nearness of his presence. She felt a new longing in her lower abdomen, one she had never felt before, and it made her want to give everything she had to him. She was his.

Nonetheless, she trembled. The mare had never been so physically close to Shamwari before, and her heart fluttered in her chest with adrenaline, but at the same time she wished she had done this sooner. Her inability to trust had left her doubtful of her feelings for the stallion for a long time, but she knew now that they had always been there, from the very first day they met. He was so kind and good and handsome; how could she feel otherwise? She loved him more than she had ever loved herself.
