I grimace as she refuses to conform, replying without my demanded title.
I could fight her on the matter, force her to call me Sir, but I want to get this fieldtrip over with as quickly as possible so instead just give her my name, ”Fallo” I grunt, my ears finally emerging from my thick Friesian locks. There are no sparks of recognition in my murky eyes as she parts with her details, but there is a softening in my features as I resign myself to the task I have just accepted. She speaks again, her voice weak with obvious fear but I make no attempt to sooth her other than to give her the truth. ”Now why would I offer to help you if I wanted to hurt you or your mother?” I give her one last look before turning sharply back towards the Lagoon.
There is an innocence about the girl that I find unnerving, a boldness that comes with a lack of experience and I find myself wanting to protect her from her own naivety. I learnt my lessons hard and fast and though I consider it the most effective way to learn, it isn’t to kindest, and I can’t help but believe that my life would have turned out a whole lot different if someone had just shown me a little kindest.
”Are you coming?” I call back to the mare, my voice a little softer than before.
