Henman Pulls Double Duty At Champions Tennis
by ATP Staff 01.12.2016
Tim Henman had a busy Thursday at Champions Tennis, falling in the day session before picking up his first win of the week in the evening session at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The local favourite first ran into a red-hot Xavier Malisse, with the Belgian picking up a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory. Henman led 5-3 in the second set, but was unable to convert on a set point and the Belgian fought back valiantly to dominate the tie-break. Malisse is 2-0 this week after scoring a win on Wednesday evening over Patrick Rafter.
“I have a good pharmacist who keeps me in-form and relaxed,” joked Malisse. “It’s been such good fun so far and I just love playing here.”
Henman regrouped after his loss to score a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, [12-10] win over Patrick Rafter in the evening session. Little separated the two serve-and-volleyers, ultimately forcing a Champions Tie-break. Rafter stormed out to a 7/1 lead, but Henman took advantage of a few uncharacteristic errors from Rafter and raised his own level to complete the comeback victory.
“It was a tough day as I haven’t played two matches in a while,” admitted Henman. “But it’s so nice to be on a court with Pat and really good fun. I’m happy to have won this one.”
Friday will kick off with the always-popular SportsAid session in the afternoon, featuring a host of players including World No. 1 Andy Murray and John McEnroe. The evening session features Fabrice Santoro taking on Younes El Aynaoui.
