Aspiring UAE tennis tennis champs will have the chance to pick up some tips from former pro Tim Henman.

The British sporting royal is one of the numerous non-golfing attractions to be featured on the sidelines of next month’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

Thousands of visitors are expected to descend on the family-friendly fan zone during the season-starting tournament, which takes place at Abu Dhabi from January 19-22.

Among the extensive entertainment options are pro workshops, with golfers of all abilities invited to brush up at a digital driving range and free one-hour clinic, while youngsters can learn the fundamentals of the game. Dedicated sports zones will also be geared up for rugby and tennis – where Henman will offer tips to would-be pros. No extra charge will apply.

"Tim will be making surprise appearances in the HSBC Village every day throughout tournament week, and will be giving tips and tricks to people and challenging them to matches on the mini tennis court," confirmed a spokesperson.

Meanwhile there will be live tunes, refreshments and food trucks at the designated chill-out zone.

As in previous years, the Friday (January 20) has been put aside for "Ladies Day", with a promised "epic prize" for the winner of the annual Best Dressed Competition. More laid-back will be Saturday’s (January 21) "Wear Red Day", with the chance to win free entry and prizes (presumably, for wearing as much red as possible).

For those more interested in the sport itself, this 12th annual championship will welcome 126 golfers including defending champion Rickie Fowler and global stars including Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Danny Willett, Branden Grace, Alex Noren, Thomas Pieters, Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood, Thongchai Jaidee and newly named Team Europe Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn.

Tickets, priced from Dh50 a day and Dh150 for a four-day pass, are on sale now. See www.abudhabigolfchampionship.com for full details.
