What they ARENT saying, is that there WERE mountain lion reports in town. There were two different samples, blood and hair, sent for DNA analysis. Both were positively identified as mountain lion. With the agreement of both Mass Wildlife, and the Federal Wildlife officials, the samples have been sent for a second set of tests to confirm, and possibly determine the area the cats ancestors are from. The cat was determined to be Male, north American in origin. (NOT an escaped pet). Investigation was done to place the samples where they were removed. According to the US's lead mountain lion expert, the odds of it not being a mountain lion with the two tests done, and the high match that was made, are 1 in many million.
