Our beautiful visitors have enabled considerable observation:
1. They are fierce in their attacks on the crows. Fiercer than the grackles, red-winged blackbirds, and icterids as a family.
2. If given the choice, they'll go for the jam over the oranges every time.
3. They're very careful in approaching the feeder, and always look around while feeding. They spend maybe 15-20 seconds topping up their sugar fix, and then they're gone again.
4. They announce their approach to the feeder with a lengthy chatter. This chatter is the tune of the Northern or Bullock's Oriole, which is integrating with the Baltimore Oriole, I guess, to form one member group of the icterid family. (This is a confirmation of the point made in the Peterson Guide, 4th edition, 1980.)
