PERSEPHONE

Persephone’s smile widened slightly at the young girl’s laughter. It was a carefree, melodic sound that was music in her ears. It distracted her, its pleasantness brushing off the memories which were conjured up by the girl’s mention of the wonderful and terrible men that she had met.

Wonderful and terrible they could indeed be, sometimes both in the same man or at the same time.

At last, the girl gave her a name. Silvanus, named for the Forest. Persephone smiled, and turned it over her tongue silently, repeating it in her head and committing it to memory beside the dark girl’s face and those bright blue eyes.

“A lovely name,” she said aloud, tilting her head as she spoke. “Mine is Persephone, named for nought.”

At Silvanus’ offer, Persephone’s mind wondered at the possibilities. A favour, promised so earnestly, was no small thing to be forgotten and tossed away in case times of trouble should arise, particularly when she was about to start a new life on these new lands, and she would need allies wherever she could find them, no doubt. Yet what could this young mare offer her, this girl who didn’t even know where she was going. For now, it seemed, not much, but in the future… who was to say.

She would not forget it – just in case.

“Thank you, Silvanus,” she replied simply, though her tone was honest. “I do hope that you can find your forest soon, or if not that I may find you when I do.”

It was a promise which turned out to be more auspicious than she could have ever realised.
