This is not the first time that jobs for consultant's wives have been bestowed by a trust and better applicants turned away. Trusts are clearly flouting the law of equal opportunity. Such posts should be fully advertised, and applicants interviewed and compared on merit alone, with no bias allowed to enter the process. Where bias appears to have occurred it should be reported to the GMC and a robust inquiry should follow by their officers and their findings made public. Consultant posts must be allocated on merit alone.
