Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

I tried to move as quietly as my heaving frame and dull, chipped hooves would let me, along the narrow paths of the forest. But the branches continued to snap under my feet and against the sides of my barrel until I stepped into a more open clearing. My earlobes flicked forward and back at the various chirps of birds and insects, clearly this terrain was alive and well in the heat of summer. It was, however, somewhat disheartening to see it so barren of our kind. Over the course of my short tenure in the Prairie, I've managed to have mostly good relations with those who have passed through this neighboring terrain. I fondly remember the spitfire of a mare, Menkhet, during her short rule over this place. Briefly after her, Valerian, whom my young brother seemed so smitten with. I only prayed now that the red stallion Asp hadn't found his way back to Luthien.

I try to push the more worrisome thoughts concerning Paradiso's whereabouts from my mind. Though I can't help but think the Forest is the proper place to start on where to find my brother. So when a spotted mare appears from out of the woods in the distance, I stand frozen, watching her as she watched me, and waited for her to approach. I wanted to make it as clear as possible that I had no intent of doing anything reckless, especially after the way this mare so bluntly called for my purpose here. I nicker in a friendly gesture anyway.

"My name is Shamwari. Who are you?" I counter, arching my neck to offer a share of breathe, if she would be so bold to accept it.

I watch her curiously from behind my brown eyes, my tail swiping back and forth over my haunches eagerly. The silence lingers for a moment more before she speaks again, demanding more information from me. If she is in fact living here now, then rightfully so. "I oversee the Prairie next door." I start slowly, gauging her interest. "My herd and I spent the spring months here when the rains flooded our home. I was looking for the generous friends whom I thought still lived here, but it seems, they are gone."
