Aurora will be eternally grateful for being in the right place at the right time to be able to come across these two. They are her salvation, or at least her ticket to truly beginning her adult life. She knows her mother had had some doubts that she would be able to survive on her own for an extended period and she wishes that she had a way of letting her parents know that she’s going to be okay.

She doesn’t want Talya to have to beg but she’s afraid that if she tries to intervene, it would sway Bob toward not letting her accompany them. She’d realized almost immediately after he’d mentioned Luthien that said island would be the perfect place for her. If she could convince Bob to settle in the Forest, or at least visit there, she knows that there would be enough cover that she could have a relatively normal life, at least during the day.

She waits with bated breath until the stallion finally does say she can join them. She gives him a brilliant smile and if she’d been Talya’s age, she would have pranced around with joy. Her head turns to the filly’s voice, smile still on her lips. “We’ll be able to get into all sorts of trouble,” she agrees brightly.

She’d never really had any friends growing up; her parents’ overprotectiveness had kept her pretty isolated. The thought of Talya’s companionship, the promise of enjoyment with a kindred spirit, almost overwhelms Aurora. She reminds herself firmly to keep her eyes closed, not wanting to reveal her disability in an emotional moment. It would break her if they were to find out and then leave her here.

She understands Bob’s warning about smothering but decides not to enlighten Talya. Aurora is used to being smothered – it comes with the territory of having your parents watch you deal with debilitating pain. Let the girl enjoy her innocence for as long as possible, the golden mare decides. And anyway, she doesn’t feel smothered, only amazed that she’s finally going to be able to live her life.

She’s slightly concerned about leaving at first light, not sure if it will be bright enough for her to see or if the sun will hamper her once it clears the horizon. She doesn’t know which direction Luthien faces in relation to the path of the sun so she can only hope that it will stay at their backs long enough for them to get there, before she’ll need to melt back into the shadows.

She’ll have to tell them about her eyes before they depart, she decides. She doesn’t want them (mainly Bob) to get frustrated with the slow pace that she’ll probably have to adopt. It’s all so frustrating – she needs to get from one place to the next as fast as possible to limit her pain but the pain keeps her from going too fast.

She gives herself a good shake and leans her shoulder against the tree trunk, now tired enough that she should be able to give her eyes the rest they’ll need for the grueling trek in the morning. “Sleep now, travel tomorrow,” she confirms, yawning. Tomorrow will be an exhausting day, at least for her.

Should we continue here or head to Luthien and pick up where this leaves off, starting with them traveling?
