GUIDELINES

- the Prairie stands as a symbol of peace and prosperity among the islands
- anyone is welcome to live here so long as they do not bring harm to the Prairie or any of it's residents
- adventure and exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged! residents are asked to use their better judgement and not travel to places that could bring them harm
- the head of the prairie has final say in all prairie matters. the secondary and third positions are not able to be challenged for and are selected by the head
- the guardians take on a more active role in the prairie; they must protect the inhabitants of the prairie and go on patrols of the prairie borderlines and shore. they can welcome strangers to the prairie and invite anyone to live here, though they must inform one of the leaders of any newcomers or visitors
Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

The lack of sun casts dark and long shadows on the backside of the rolling hills. In a matter of moments, we are flanked by darkness. In between the chatter from Silvanus, I listen to the chorus of insects, whose communal voice rises as the sky overhead grows darker. Their song cuts through the sound of our movement, of the reeds that bend and snap in the wake of our hooves. Despite nightfall, I can still make out the mare's lean silhouette beside me. I can still smell her perfume and hear her clear voice. We crest one more hill together and I stop at its peak, my brown eyes searching for where I'd left my herd in the immediate distance. My young son is the first to emerge from the scattered woodline, and he chirps a high pitched whinny in our direction. A brief smirk crosses my lips.

I toss my head and look to Silvanus now, standing idly at the top of the hill. It offers a decent view of the entire terrain, which is mostly flat from here on out until one reaches the woodline in the distance, which marks the border between the Prairie and the Forest. Something about what Silvanus says about love sticks with me. I mull it over silently during the short course of our walk. There were so many I cared for here. Deeply cared for. Bri and her undying loyalty. She gave me my first son. Dreadbite, who could very well be missing, and our perfect daughter, Melsuline. My mother in the Dunes, despite our complicated relationship. Paradiso, my brother. Vita Nova, my sister. But loved? Bri's image comes again to the forefront of my mind.

An ear lobe flicks to one side as Silvanus changes the subject, talking about the land in which she grew up. The name of her sire sounds familiar, but I do not know him. Perhaps Valentine did. Her story and her relationship to this place sounds complicated. I know what that is like, all too well.

When she asks me about the Prairie, I take a long moment to weigh my thoughts. "I was born here, and for a long time, I never felt like I had a home, either." I begin. "The stallion who raised me used to rule this place. He wasn't my father by blood, but he treated me like one of his own. After I rambled on my own for a while, I came to realize and appreciate the community he created here, in this place. It all of a sudden seemed important, to provide a safe place for those you cared about. The Prairie gave me a purpose."
