FIRE BURNS WHERE IT FALLS

Maslakhat rather enjoyed hearing Keyik speak this way. She was once more easily swayed under Wolpertinger’s influence, but now she carried herself with the dignity of a queen and her half sister was relegated to tucking herself away in the underbrush. He wanted Keyik to succeed of course, but he was unsure exactly what she planned on doing to convince the proprietors of Atlantis that she would be the most fit leader.

“Of course they do,” he added, pausing for a moment to consider the implications of what Keyik was proposing. If she wanted control over this island and perhaps others, she would have to have a network—an expansive one—that she could trust and utilize at her every whim. This took time, and he wondered if Keyik expected this to happen overnight.

“And if you want the rest of these fools to respect you, you should prove to them that you are already powerful,” he continued, flicking his dark tail as he offered her a bit of unsolicited advice. Maslakhat had spent enough time with Valve to know that true power came from either fear or respect, and most of the time it was a combination of both.
